The Richmond Spiders (12 seed) squeaked out a victory over Vanderbilt (5 seed) in the Southwest Bracket of the NCAA Tournament.
Why the NCAA insists on using geographic designations for the brackets is beyond me since most teams are assigned far from home.
It was a nail-biter. At times it appeared as if Vanderbilt was going to pull away behind its big man 6-11, 255 pound Festus Ezeli, but Richmond’s back-up center Darius Garrett (6-9, 210) took control with outstanding shot blocks. He forced Vanderbilt to change its game.
Kevin Anderson took control of the offense for the Spiders and scored most of his 25 points in the second half. It’s a role Anderson has played time and again.
The victory could hardly be called an upset – Richmond was only a two-point underdog.
Richmond plays Morehead State in the next round. Morehead State shocked Louisville by one point today. That was an upset. The Spiders will not take the Eagles lightly on Saturday.
