As almost all followers of local politics expected, Jan Perry officially entered the race for mayor of Los Angeles.
With both Greuel and Perry in the race, it is just a matter of time – probably a short time – before at least two other machine politicians join the fray. They cannot afford to let Greuel and Perry have first crack at potential campaign donors.
Kevin James is on his own track as far as fundraising goes. He would probably be elated if most of the City Council entered the race and carved up their segment of the money pie into over a dozen slices.
Fundraising could become quite complicated and unpredictable if Austin Beutner and Rick Caruso decide to run. They will attract serious money. Will other hopefuls wait it out until they know what those two intend?
Possibly – why bother entering a race if most of the campaign loot is committed?
For now, Perry and Greuel represent the establishment, so I’ll limit my comments to them.
Putting issues aside and focusing instead on fundamental characteristics, Perry is far superior to Greuel – more articulate and a far more active advocate for her constituents that Greuel ever was when she served as Council Member of CD2.
Greuel is also owned and operated by DWP’s powerful IBEW union. That alone represents three strikes against her.
So, it’s time to sit back and see the lineup develop…… and follow the money.
