I think we can all agree that Los Angeles’ budgetary problems are severe, deep-rooted and go back years.
So what has Dennis Zine been doing about it?
He states as one of his “accomplishments” taking a 10 percent salary cut. Certainly that is a hardship for a double-dipper whose LAPD pension is soaking up badly needed dollars from the general fund.
I might add it was reported he padded his pension by using a slight of hand (but legal) maneuver to enhance his pension benefit when he became a City Council member back in 2002.
He pats himself on the back for introducing a motion to compare management salaries in LA with comparable positions in other cities.
Regardless of what other municipal governments pay their employees, when our city is in as deep a financial crisis as we are, skip the study motion and insist on an immediate cut that makes sense for Los Angeles. If the managers don’t like it, let them find better jobs. I’m sure the classifieds are filled with them.
Zine called for a review of cell phone usage. Greuel hopped right on that rather than assist the Office of Finance with its embarrassingly flawed fee collection process.
What does it take to eliminate cell phones? The general managers should be able to make an immediate decision on that without a review. That’s the type of decision that falls within their job descriptions. Why not skip the review and pressure the mayor to eliminate all unnecessary phones? If Governor Brown can eliminate half the civilian automobile fleet, Villaraigosa should be able to zap half the phones with no compromise in services to the public.
Zine, like his colleagues on the council, is simply nibbling around the fringe of the budget problem, afraid to deal with the core issue of benefits. Benefits will devour the general fund from the inside as cancer does to the human body.
Zine suggested that McIntyre save his “manure” to fertilize the new turf of the proposed NFL Stadium (I suppose that means AEG will not install Field Turf).
I have a better idea. He should spread Doug’s “manure” on his own head. It might encourage the growth of common sense…..or Zine can add water and become the city’s official Chia Pet.
