Michael Trujillo is anything but a rising star these days.
The one time darling of Villaraigosa’s campaigns has suffered a series of setbacks in the last two years.
He was the campaign manager for the union-backed Measure B rushed to the ballot by IBEW-pandering members of the City Council. It lost despite a spending advantage of at least 10-1 over the opposition mounted by grassroots groups.
He managed Janice Hahn’s campaign against Gavin Newsom where she lost by a landslide despite the San Francisco mayor’s late entry in the race.
After the Hahn debacle, you would think Trujillo would have taken a vacation from politics at that point. Instead, he signed on as Jose Huizar’s spokesman in this year’s CD 14 race.
CD14 has been one of the nastiest city council campaigns waged in a long time, but Trujillo raised the bar of repugnancy with his now infamous e-mail where he crossed the line from negative campaigning to tasteless personal attacks against Huizar’s opponent Rudy Martinez.
Up until his e-mail, it had been a fair fight – each side trading accusations that would make City of Bell officials blush.
His tasteless act not only got him removed from Huizar’s campaign, but from Richard Vladovic’s school board re-election team as well. That’s two in two days. I don’t know what the record is.
The controversy regarding the irresponsible rhetoric surrounding Congresswoman Gifford’s shooting is still fresh in our memories. God only knows what Trujillo was thinking by threatening to “put a political bullet in between Martinez’ forehead.”
I think it is time for him to take a vacation and reflect upon his career.
